Bootcamp

Seems crazy to think that I would be expressing gratitude for something that drags me from my sleep at 4:45 AM three times a week and makes me feel like I could throw up half of the time, but I really am grateful for my bootcamp experience.

It is something I have put off trying for a long time now but I finally decided the time was right back in September. After letting my exercise routine go for WAY too long {due to babysitting for almost a year, too much creative team/design work, eating like garbage so I didn't care, too many excuses to list ...} I was tired of feeling blah. I certainly wasn't as bad off weight wise or even fitness wise as I have been in the past, but I didn't like where I was at. I had gained back weight that I had worked hard to lose and I needed to stop the cycle. So, in August, shortly after the kids went back to school I decided it was time to buckle down. I started running 5 days a week and was feeling pretty good about things. I was watching what I was eating and was starting to lose some weight - YAY! Trouble is, running every day on a treadmill was getting boring and it was still too hot to run outside {still is, in my opinion}. Enter, bootcamp.

My friend Michelle has been offering bootcamps for over a year now. I would get her e-mails every month, think to myself "I should really do that," and then move onto the next thought. Toward the end of August I got another e-mail ... new participants could get 2 months for the cost of 1 month. I decided now was my time. I plunked down my cash and started dragging myself out of bed.

It's been 2 months now and I am hooked. I have never been late {which is pretty remarkable considering most nights I'm not in bed until between 11 and midnight ... sometimes later}. I've only missed one time (the day before Super Saturday - too little sleep to function). I've challenged myself and hope that I have encouraged others. We usually have about 8 people there of all different ages and fitness levels. We push each other, cheer for each other, and work our tails off - literally. I have been on the verge of throwing up more than once.

The beauty of bootcamp is this - it's different every single time. I love the variety. As much as I hate the 4:45 AM wake up call I *LOVE* being done with an intense workout by 6 AM so I can get on with my day (and actually shower and get myself presentable rather than being in my running clothes all day). I feel stronger and more confident. Most of all, I see and feel results which is ALWAYS nice.

Today we had assessments for the beginning of a new session (yup ... started another session - WOOT!). Since the beginning I have improved my half mile time by over a minute {ran my half mile in 3:39 this morning - sorry, had to write that down cuz it will likely NEVER happen again and I was super proud of myself for breaking 4 minutes}, I can do 20 more push ups in a minute than I started with {even doing 10 on my toes}, and have increased my sit ups by 7 in a minute (yes, abs still have a ways to go *wink* but I had an abdominal injury early on so I had to take it easy for a while). While I won't divulge the numbers on the scale, I will say that I was pleased with the numbers there, too ;)

Overall it's been a great experience and it feels so good to be giving this gift to myself. I am still running on my non-bootcamp days and I'm seeing improvement there, too, although I have to learn to run outside with more enjoyment ... bootcamp is helping with that because we do mix in a lot of running. I plan to run another 10K in the spring and am officially registered to be part of a Ragnar relay team with a group in my ward at the end of February. YIKES!! You're sure to be hearing more about that ....

Mormon Messages

I am so grateful for the new Mormon Messages videos that the church has been putting out. Each one of them is so uplifting!! Any time I feel the need for a "pick me up" or a reminder of who I am, where I'm going, the blessings I have, the ability to overcome trials, etc. I can find the perfect message. They now have some that are geared to the youth, too, that are inspiring examples of the good that exists in the "rising generation."

You can subscribe to the YouTube Channel so you are alerted whenever a new video is released so you never miss one! They are easy to share on blogs and Facebook, too. I posted one on Motherhood back in September ... still love that one. I can't pick a favorite because they each touch me in a different way depending on what I "need" to hear when I take the time to watch them.

These are just a few that I love and go back to again and again - ENJOY!!

Date Night

* photo taken by me on our date tonight ... dinner at BJ's *YUM* and a movie!

Oh, what would we do without date night?!? I am lucky that we have a regularly scheduled date night on our calendars ... it is often one of the few times during the week that we get to sit with each other to catch up and take a break from our rat race!!! It seems that the older our kids get, the more active/busy they become - which obviously filters down to the amount of time that Steve and I have together. I feel like most days we are running opposite directions in our responsibilities between home, kids' schedules, and church duties. He walks in the door and I walk out. I get back from running the kids to and from activities and he's on his way out to a meeting ... you get the idea.

We've been part of a babysitting group for years now - since before Cougar was born - where we swap every Friday. One couple watches all of the kids and the 3 other couples have 4 1/2 hours of *FREE* child care!! When it's our turn we have 16 kids {including our 4} at our house. When we drop off we get to do whatever our little hearts desire!! We've done lots of dinner & a movies, game nights with other couples, shopping, sporting events, cleaning, painting, DVR night, temple trips, etc.

Tonight was bittersweet because it was actually our last night as part of the group *sigh* With Brinley about to turn 12 we are able to call on her for a few hours so we can sneak away for a date! With Steve's work/church schedule it was making our babysitting weekends (when we had everyone here) a lot tougher on our family. We would babysit 16 kids on Friday, Steve would work early (7 AM) on Saturday, I would do the running to 2 different games (and often birthday parties or other errands) by myself, Steve would be in meetings most of the day Sunday {really - starting at 7 AM}, and then he would go into work early on Monday. It was making for super long and hard weekends so we knew it was time to make some changes. We will now be opting for more "family nights" on Friday where each child will take turns picking our activity and we will get in more of our dates on Saturday night. It feels so strange to be at this "turning point" in our lives as our kids get older, but we will continue to treasure out date nights ... they are literally the glue that holds us together at times and I'm so grateful for a husband who thinks they are just as important as I do!!

Movie Night

I'm always grateful for an excuse to have a movie night with our family - we love the time to throw all caution to the wind, eat loads of candy, and pile onto the couches {or the floor} with blankets and each other to spend 2 hours together. Tonight was our first chance to watch Toy Story 3 since buying it earlier this week. We had seen it in the theater months ago but we are always counting down to the DVD releases of our fave movies that we've seen in the theater. Other recent favorites are How to Train Your Dragon (which Cougar wants to watch every day) and we're counting down to Despicable Me being released on December 14th and Ramona & Beezus coming out next week ... especially since we never got to see that one!

It's not just about DVD movies that we have seen in the theater, either. Another movie night excuse is a DCOM release. In case you don't know what that is, it's a Disney Channel Original Movie. In fact, I'm pretty sure that one of our first "official" movie nights was when High School Musical was released on Disney Channel years ago. I can't begin to tell you the number of DCOMs that we have counted down to {for weeks and sometimes months - can you say Camp Rock 2?}!!! Funny thing is that I look forward to most of these movies just as much as my girls. Yes, I just wrote that and posted it on the web ... and I'm almost 39. What a thrilling life I lead, huh?!?

Let's not forget the candy buffet ... the kids love that part of it! We usually give everyone the chance to pick a favorite treat and we put them all out and give everyone their own bowl to fill with goodies :D Our menu tonight consisted of gummy bears, sour apple rings, peach rings, plain m&ms, peanut butter m&ms, york peppermint patties, starburst, skittles, tootsie rolls, red vines, and twizzlers- as if the Halloween candy we still had in our house wasn't quite enough. All of this after we had scones for dinner {with cinnamon sugar, honey, and homemade raspberry jam}. Pretty sure that may have earned me Mother of the Year tonight!!

Disneyland

I could honestly post 1,000+ photos to show just how grateful I am for Disneyland. There is no question that it is *one* of the happiest places on earth for our family. We have been going there on a regular basis for about 6 years now. We just ordered season passes for our entire family for Christmas - WOOT!! We have a trip planned the first week of December and we will go again for Spring Break, Fall Break, and again next December before they expire. To say our family loves it there would be a huge understatement.

What do we love about it? It is magical. We have so many amazing memories from our trips there. We laugh together, we play together, we take turns riding different rides with each other, we have traditions {like buying sugar sticks, raspberry white chocolate cookies, corn dogs, and a new antennae ball ... every trip}, we all have different favorites and have learned to compromise what we might want to ride or eat for what someone else wants, we bond. Seriously. My parents spend 2 days with us almost every visit and we're hoping that one day we can talk Steve's parents into joining us, too ... it is the funnest time with grandparents! It has been just over a year since our last visit and it is probably the longest span between visits that we've had in 5 years. We are all dying to get back and have been talking about it for months now!!

Merm

That's what I've called my mom since High School. I don't really remember where it came from {HS was over 20 years ago, people}, but I'm pretty sure my friend Elissa was a part of it ... she called her mom Merm, too. It had something to do with being in a store or a crowd and EVERYONE calling out "Mom" when searching for their female parent. Merm was far more easy to recognize than Mom. And so it stuck - and even became a license plate on one of our cars for YEARS!!!

Today (and every day) I am grateful for my mom ... who is still Merm to me and is now Grammy to my kids. It is her birthday today!!! There are so many things that I love about my mom. She is patient with me, she listens no matter how long I talk on the phone, she doesn't freak out if we go 3+ weeks without talking, she has a great sense of style, she has fabulous taste in handbags and shoes, she is a great cook and makes the best Texas Sheet Cake and Caramel Corn {which she makes almost every time we are in town}, she is amazing with my kids (picture the poor woman playing Tickle Monster for hours with 4 rambunctious kiddos), she is friendly and outgoing, she has a beautiful singing voice, she is a great teacher, she has never waivered in her faith and testimony, she has sacrificed more for me than I will ever know, she waits with the strollers at Disneyland so the adults can ride the rides (and doesn't complain), she rides the rides at Disneyland with my kiddos - even when she may not really *want* to {Tower of Terror - 'nuf said}, she loves Paradise Bakery as much as I do, she is a friend to everyone ... I could go on and on. I can only hope that one day my kids think HALF as much of me as I do of my mom. I really hope she knows how much I love her. Really.

* This is one of my fave pics of my mom. It was taken almost 5 years ago right after she and Brinley {yes, that's Brinley} got DRENCHED on the Grizzly River Run at California Adventure!

Sonic

It's no secret to those who know me well that I am grateful for Sonic. It's probably sad just HOW grateful I am for Sonic. It is the fuel that gets me through a long day (or project), our Friday afternoon "we survived another week" treat {during happy hour, of course}, Steve's "my wife has had a hard day and I will be a hero if I bring it home" go-to item, my "pass the time while I wait for my dancers" stop, the perfect "my friend could use a pick-me-up" (and so could I) ... you get the idea. There is something magic about the vanilla they add to my Diet Dr. Pepper that makes me plain happy. It's a little sad that some of the employees know us fairly well (although I'm pretty sure they don't know our names) but I tip them to keep them quiet - heaven forbid anyone were to REALLY know how often we go. I've actually cut back recently in my efforts to eat a little better ... join me for a moment of silence. I sure hope the carhops aren't worried about us!

P.S. I'm also loving the fun camera apps that I have on my new {in August} phone ... so.much.fun!!! Seriously - who would have thought you could take such cool pics w/ a phone?

Goodly Parents

Today I'm grateful for goodly parents. Steve and I are both lucky to have been raised in awesome families. Our parents have been so supportive of us and our adventures over the past 13 years as a family as well as for our entire lives before that!! It is so fun to now see our kids learning from our parents and watching them as grandparents.

I'm especially grateful today because my parents have been set apart as missionaries and entered the Missionary Training Center today!! They are serving in the Church Administration and Family History mission and will be overseeing a now pilot program that the church is working with - they will work with church leaders throughout Southern California in developing this new program {called the Yaunt Fund ... similar to the Perpetual Education Fund but in the U.S.} and will then meet with leaders in SLC to provide feedback and work to help refine and improve the program. There is A LOT that is unknown about what they will be doing and what to expect as they serve, but I am so proud of them for finally making the decision ... we've been trying to convince them to turn in their papers for years!!!

Our Own Jack Sparrow

We knew that having a boy after 3 girls would be a whole new experience, but I don't know that you can ever be fully prepared for just what those differences may be. Cougar keeps us on our toes and I can't begin to relate even PART of the funny/tragic things that he has done over the course of his brief 3 1/2 years with us!!! I wish I had been better about writing them down but that's a story for another day ...

Anyhow - after weeks of changing his mind about what he wanted to be for Halloween he finally settled on being a pirate. We knew it was ok to think about buying an actual costume when he declared the same choice 3 days in a row. Nevermind it was the Monday before Halloween. I scored the last pirate costume in his size on the cheap *YAY* and topped it off with a sword and eyepatch. I'm pretty sure the sword was all it would have taken to make the boy happy.

You've never seen a more enthusiastic pirate than ours. He and that sword have been inseparable for days now. He actually broke it as he got in the car on the way to his preschool Halloween party and was heartbroken when I told him he would have to leave it at home so we could fix it. "But pirates have swords," he said with the poutiest lip ... ripped my heart right out. I headed straight to Target for super glue and a new sword. All was well with the world after his party when he realized he might actually have TWO swords to play with {and the new sword also came with a hook for his other hand ... be still his heart!!}!

Here are just a few pics that I snapped before his party - they kill me. His personality really shines in them. My fave is the one with his tongue up his nose ... he does that constantly. Gross.

Lastly, a video of him singing a song he learned in preschool. He got most of the words right and then did a little ad lib to finish things out.

** In case you can't quite understand it's supposed to say:
I'm a mean old witch with a hat, and I ride on my broom with my cat. My chin is pointed and my shoes are, too, and you better watch out 'cuz I might scare you. I'm a mean old witch with a hat ... BOO!!

Happy Halloween Weekend ... we've got our ward Trunk or Treat tomorrow so I'm sure there will be more pics to come!

Labor Day Road Trip

* This post was actually written in the car on our way home from this weekend getaway ... almost 2 months ago. Talk about fizzling out fast, huh? I didn't even get any pics downloaded for weeks. So glad I got this written "in the moment" or it would have been forgotten!*

We are usually not ones for terribly "spontaneous" travel - Steve has to block his schedule in order to get time off and our trips are typically planned at least a few months in advance to accommodate both work and school schedules. So, when Steve suggested that we head out of town for Labor Day ... just a few days before the long weekend ... I was a little surprised. He already had Saturday off {in his regular every other Saturday work schedule} and their office was closing on Monday to observe Labor Day so his schedule wouldn't be an issue. The girls, of course, were out of school on Monday, too. The "normal" plan would have been to leave on Friday night but since we were hosting our babysitters group on Friday night we decided to wait until Saturday morning to head out.

We are super lucky to have a California getaway at our disposal without having to make reservations too far in advance. Even with my parents being out of town they are generous enough to let us drop in when we feel the need to get away!! We pulled the kids out of bed about 5 AM {after my 45 minutes of sleep ... no exaggeration} and got everyone loaded up. Steve had gotten the car packed late Friday night so almost everything was ready to go. By the time we were completely ready it was about 5:30 - we were making good time! A quick stop for milk, a Whatchamacallit for Steve (his road trip candy bar of choice), and some ice and we were on our way!!!

About 30 minutes west of home on I-10 I remembered one vital part of our trip ... the key to my parents' house!! They are normally in California when we visit so we never need to bring a key, but with them being in Utah for the "summer," the house is locked up tight. Ugh. We called to see if they had a key rock or something outside that would have a hidden key that we could use to get in but they don't ... Boo. We exited the freeway and headed back home to get the key.

The extra hour of travel was a total bummer but after we picked up the key we grabbed some breakfast and were REALLY on our way :) A very uneventful 3 1/2 hours later we arrived in sunny {and hot} La Quinta where we unloaded our car, got settled, ate some lunch, and got changed for our next adventure.

Now here is where the major spontenaity comes into play. Most of the time when we come to California we hang out at my parents', Steve plays some golf, we swim, eat, watch movies, etc. We still planned to do all of that this weekend, but we also decided it would be fun to do something unexpected - go to the beach. Our kids have only been to the beach one other time ... last October on our last Disneyland trip we stayed in Newport Beach and spent one afternoon playing in the ocean and the sand. So, after being in the car ALL morning (and longer than we expected due to the key incident) we loaded up again, this time with sand toys, beach towels, snacks, and a beach umbrella, and headed back out on another 2 hour adventure.

I'm going to post about our entire beach adventure in a separate post ... mostly cuz I've got pictures and it was a fabulous experience and it would make this post WAY too long if I wrote about it here. All that I will say is that we spent the afternoon/evening in Huntington Beach {we had never been there} and fell in *LOVE* with the area and the "vibe" of the town. We will definitely be going back and I am now dreaming ... nightly ... of one day owning a beach house.

Sunday always proves to be a much less eventful day. After going to church at 9 AM (which seemed SO EARLY after our long travel day on Saturday and the fact that we have 1 PM church at home) we came back for an afternoon of relaxation. It was so nice to actually have Steve with us on a Sunday because at home we don't see him much between all of the meetings and other responsibilities that he has. About 2 PM he suggested that I lay down with Cougar to take a nap ... he could tell I needed one after my lack of sleep before our trip.

Now understand - I NEVER take naps. Really. I honestly can't remember the last time I had a nap. I can never justify stopping to lay down when I have a list of things to do that never ends. Well, in the spirit of our "fly by the seat of your pants" kind of trip I decided to take him up on his offer and laid down. Cougar finally settled in and we slept ... for a long time. I think it was about 2 1/2 hours. I kind of lost track of time {another reason I don't take naps}. Boy, did it feel good. It was just what I needed. It also reminded me why I don't take naps ... I felt like half of my day was gone. The girls had spent the time playing dress-ups, reading books, and watching a bit of TV. Steve finished a book he had been reading. And I slept.

At that point I finished up making dinner (we planned ahead and brought a pork roast with us) using several things out of my mom's pantry - thanks, mom! We had a nice dinner together, cleaned up, and got ready for a family movie night! With no eggs in the house and my kids being on popcorn overload from babysitters group on Friday night I was left with very few ideas for treats to make. I dug into the "brain archives" and decided to make tarts and cinnamon sugar pie crust.

When I was growing up my mom would make pie crust and we would fill it with jam to make tarts. Then we would take the extra crust, brush it with melted butter, and sprinkle cinnamon sugar on it. I dug through my mom's cupboards and pantry (thanks again, mom) and found the few and simple ingredients we needed ... flour, shortening, salt, and water. We had a brand new bottle of raspberry jam in the fridge and cinnamon sugar in the cupboard. 45 minutes later we had the most delicious treats that reminded me of my own childhood ... and that my kids loved, too! Definitely adding those into the treat rotation at our house!

Then, to top off our lazy Sunday, we all piled onto the queen size bed in one of the guest rooms to watch Annie - the original version - on VHS tape. Yup ... totally old school. It was so fun to share a movie that I LOVED as a girl and hearing Steve singing along to the whole thing made it even better!!! The girls loved it, too. Cougar liked the autocopter scenes the best. One by one the kids started falling asleep and I laid between them basking in the joy of this fabulous family moment ... soaking it all in. It's rare that we get these kind of "frozen in time" moments where we are all together, we have no where to be, no one is arguing, and we can just enjoy. I was reminded that we need to have them more often.

Enter Monday - the day we would have to head home. We woke up and went to Maxcy's Grill ... no trip to California is complete without breakfast at Maxcy's. We've been going there for years and we almost always get the same thing. The kids get #7 combos (two of them that we split between the four of them) which consist of 3 hotcakes, 3 eggs, and either sausage or bacon - we get one of each. Steve usually gets french toast {although today he got an omelette ... with a piece of french toast} and I get the most amazing breakfast burrito on the planet. There is always more food than we can eat and we are NEVER disappointed.

We came home to pick up ... the reality that our trip was winding down. I told Steve to head out to the golf course because no trip would be complete without him squeezing in some golf. He loves it and never gets a chance to golf at home. By the time he got back he had played 24 holes ... most of which he played pretty well - YAY! The kids piled on the bed again to watch Aquamarine - a movie that they learned to love on one of our many trips here. I picked up all of the clothes laying around, toys that we brought, cleaned up the kitchen, etc. Swimming was the last thing we would be able to do before we needed to head home. Boo. The thought of going home this time was especially sad because we had had such a great few days together. No internet, no work, no church meetings, no agenda.

The kids always love to swim at Grammy and Paca's house. Funny, since we have our own pool that they can use whenever they want!! I guess with life being more busy at home it makes it harder to find the time to just relax and swim. We spent over an hour playing, jumping, splashing, and laughing ... all of us in the pool - that rarely happens at home. Steve was actually still golfing when we got in the pool and he ended up being on the hole across from my parents' place just as we were getting in so we got to wave to him from across the lake. He came home to join us and we soaked up some of the last of the perfect weekend.

I learned or was reminded of several things this weekend:
1. We need to be more spontaneous more often.
2. I love the beach ... and so do my kids.
3. Sharing my own childhood memories and enjoyments with my own children is beyond sweet.
4. We have a lot of family traditions that are a result of our many trips to California.
5. Getting away from the rigors of everyday life and disconnecting leads to some of the best memories and bonding time around.
6. A queen sized bed can fit 2 adults and 4 children.
7. The best road trips require very little planning.
8. We need to spend a day at the beach every time we go to California.
